Porcine carotid artery replacement with biodegradable electrospun poly-e-caprolactone vascular prosthesis
Conclusions: Biodegradable, electrospun PCL grafts showed good surgical and mechanical properties, no aneurysm formation, and similar short-term patency compared with ePTFE grafts. Rapid endothelialization and cell ingrowth confirms favorable PCL graft-recipient biological interaction. Despite good early results, long-term follow-up is required before clinical application.Clinical Relevance: Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene vascular grafts provide excellent mechanical and handling properties. However, their late postimplant performance is poor due to nonhomogeneous endothelialisation, intimal hyperplasia - substrates of th...

Anti-platelet and anti-coagulant therapy in peripheral arterial disease prior to surgical intervention.
CONCLUSION: Peripheral artery disease is a complex and multifactorial clinical condition. The use of dual anti-platelets, such as aspirin and clopidogrel, are the key in preventing major cardiovascular events as well as stroke and death. Utilization of anti-coagulation such as direct oral anti-coagulants' as additional parameters for the prevention of disease progression, is paramount. Eventually, the choice of either dual-antiplatelet therapy or combined anti-coagulation with anti-platelets should be carefully considered, particularly following the most recent published debatable studies. Statin therapy improved long-term prognosis in patients with major non-cardiac vascular surgeries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis demonstrated that statin therapy was associated with improved survival rates and patency rates and with reduced cardiovascular or stroke morbidities in patients who underwent non-cardiac vascular surgeries. PMID: 29953967 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Multi-Omics Signatures Link to Ticagrelor Effects on Vascular Function in Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with prior acute coronary syndrome, ticagrelor 60 mg BD monotherapy significantly improved brachial flow-mediated dilation compared with aspirin monotherapy and was associated with significant changes in metabolomic and lipidomic signatures.REGISTRATION: URL: https://www.CLINICALTRIALS: gov; Unique identifier: NCT03881943.PMID:35387483 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.121.317513

Impact of Adding Aspirin to Beta-Blocker and Statin in High-Risk Patients Undergoing Major Vascular Surgery
In this study we evaluated the benefits of adding aspirin (A) to BB and S (ABBS), with/without angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE-I) on postoperative outcome in high-risk patients undergoing major vascular surgery. Methods: Analysis of consecutive patients undergoing elective vascular surgery at the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center was performed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were done using cardiac risk index [Revised Cardiac Risk Index (RCRI), coronary artery disease (CAD), insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), cerebral vascular disease, renal dysfunction, congestive heart failure, and m...

Cardiac Risk Assessment, Morbidity Prediction, and Outcome in the Vascular Intensive Care Unit
Conclusions: The RCRI’s discriminatory capacity is low, and this raises difficulties in assessing cardiac risk in patients undergoing vascular intervention. The AMI is highest in the OMT group without prior cardiac intervention, which mandates protocols to identify patients requiring cardiac intervention prior to vascular procedures.

Cilostazol, Not Aspirin, Prevents Stenosis of Bioresorbable Vascular Grafts in a Venous Model.
CONCLUSIONS: Cilostazol prevents stenosis of bioresorbable vascular graft in a mouse inferior vena cava implantation model up to 24 weeks and is accompanied by reduction of smooth muscle cell proliferation and acute inflammation. PMID: 26183618 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Barriers for Aspirin and Statin Adherence Following Vascular Interventions in Vascular Quality Initiative Participants
Antiplatelet and statin therapy has shown benefit in patients with vascular disease. The Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) Arterial Quality Committee has set a long-range goal of 100% prescribing rate in vascular patients without contraindications. To meet this ambitious requirement, VQI centers have adopted an approach of discharging eligible patients on aspirin (ASA) and statins. Nevertheless, there is currently limited information on follow-up medication adherence. The purpose of this study is to determine ASA and statin compliance in VQI-enrolled patients after vascular interventions, with an additional aim to elucidat...

Cryoplasty offers no advantage over standard balloon angioplasty for the treatment of in-stent stenosis.
Abstract In-stent restenosis is the primary failure mode of endovascular treatment of occlusive disease in the femeropopliteal segment. Cryoplasty has been proposed to reduce intimal hyperplasia through induction of apoptosis. We sought to evaluate the efficacy of cryoplasty for treatment of in-stent restenosis compared to conventional balloon angioplasty (CBA). After IRB approval, a retrospective record review was performed of reinterventions for in-stent restenosis by a single vascular surgery group at a university hospital. Reinterventions involving cryoplasty and CBA were evaluated at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months aft...

Induction of Angiogenesis by a Type III Phosphodiesterase Inhibitor, Cilostazol, Through Activation of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-γ and cAMP Pathways in Vascular Cells.
CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that the favorable effects of cilostazol on ischemic leg might be through the angiogenesis through the induction of HGF via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ and cAMP pathways. PMID: 26769045 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Characteristics and outcomes of patients with peripheral artery disease undergoing endovascular revascularization: A community hospital perspective.
CONCLUSIONS: We found that favorable outcomes may be achieved with a multi-disciplinary peripheral artery disease program at community hospitals. The incorporation of quality improvement practices may further help to develop standardized and regionalized approaches to care delivery for patients with peripheral artery disease.
